London and Baku win bids for major sporting events
London has been chosen to host the 2016 European Swimming Championships while Azerbaijani capital Baku has been awarded the rights to host the fourth Islamic Solidarity Games (ISG) in 2017.
The London event will be the first international competition at the Aquatics Centre since the London 2012 Olympic Games.
As 2016 is an Olympic year, the exact date has yet to be confirmed, but it is believed that the competition will take place in late July or August.
Meanwhile, Baku has strengthened its reputation as a venue for major events with its winning bid for the ISG. ISG is a multinational and multi-sport event involving the elite athletes of the 57 nations in the Organisation of the Islamic Conference.
It is the second major sporting competition the city has secured, following its successful bid for the 2015 European Games.
