MPs: FIFA governance 'needs reform'
MPs have called on world football's governing body FIFA to undertake a "full, urgent and independent" probe into claims of misconduct during the 2018 World Cup bid process.
In its new report, the House of Commons culture, media and sport (CMS) committee said it was "appalled" at allegations made against some members of FIFA's executive committee. The report has also called on FIFA to implement a "fundamental reform" of its governance and the way in which competitions such as the World Cup are awarded to countries.
Meanwhile, the Football Association (FA) has come under fire after the committee said that England's bid for the 2018 World Cup "lacked a number of components" to succeed. CMS committee chair John Whittingdale said: "We urge the FA to continue to press for real change in FIFA and to work with other national associations to ensure that it happens.
"We also call on FIFA to prove its commitment to increased openness and transparency by publishing its Ethics Committee report."
