Malawi Olympic Committee tours K2
K2 Crawley has hosted representatives of the Malawi Olympic Committee, with a view to its using the leisure centre as a training camp for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
The President of the Malawi Olympic Committee, Floriano Massa and the secretary general, Helene Mpinganjira, visited K2 Crawley on 3 April.
They watched a children's multi-skills sports festival and presented awards before listening to the Thomas Bennett Community College's African drummers, accompanied by Crawley Councillor Beryl MeCrow, Cabinet member for Leisure and Culture.
This was followed by a full tour of K2 Crawley's facilities, including the Bodyworks clinic, the pool area and the athletics arena.
The Malawi delegation was also welcomed to Crawley Town Hall by Mayor Howard Bloom and Mayoress Sue Bloom before they visited the Gatwick Park Hospital, where they met consultants and physiotherapists.
Councillor Beryl MeCrow said: "K2 Crawley is a fantastic leisure centre and it's great that we were able to show off the excellent facilities to the delegation from Malawi.
"I expect this to be the first of many visits from Olympic committees, keen to discover what K2 Crawley has to offer them as a potential training camp for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games."
Oona Muirhead, SEEDA's executive director for skills and sustainable prosperity, added: "The south east has a huge amount to offer the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.
"SEEDA and its partners are committed to using the inspiration of the Games to celebrate excellence and are therefore delighted to welcome representatives from Malawi National Olympic Committee to the region. We are confident that we have world-class facilities in our Pre-Games Training Camps venues and can offer Malawi a welcome which is second to none."
K2 is managed by sports trustS Freedom Leisure and Greenwich Leisure (GLL), on behalf of Crawley Borough Council.
