Banksy's Dismaland heads to Calais to be repurposed as migrant shelters
After its barnstorming success as a pop-up visitor attraction, Banksy’s Dismaland will be dismantled and sent to migrants camps in Calais, France, to provide temporary accommodation.
In a post on the attraction’s website titled “Coming soon... Dismaland Calais” it was revealed that materials taken from Dismaland will be repurposed to build shelters for migrants.
“All the timber and fixtures from Dismaland are being sent to the ‘jungle’ refugee camp near Calais to build shelters,” read a short statement. “No online tickets will be available.”
During its run, which started on 22 August and ended on 27 September, Dismaland sold out its ticket allocation generating £20m (US$30.5m, €27.3m) for the seaside town of Weston-super-Mare, drawing 150,000 visitors in the process. The deconstruction of Dismaland is expected to take around three weeks.
