The Marriott West India Quay hotel in London has been cleared of culpability regarding Tottenham Hotspur FC’s food poisoning claim.

Spurs were allegedly considering taking legal action against the hotel after a number of their players grew ill after eating there the night before they lost an important league game against West Ham on 7 May.

The investigation, carried out by Tower Hamlets Council and the Health Protection Agency found that the likely cause of illness was Norovirus – a viral form of gastroenteritis – after one of the people who fell ill tested positive.

The lasagne that Spurs suggested could be to blame has been ruled out. A spokesperson for Tower Hamlets said: “The available food taken from the hotel kitchen linked to that eaten by the [team members] has been tested and found to be completely negative.”

Spurs responded to the findings on its website, saying: “Given that results from a number of sources remain outstanding, it is too early to draw any final conclusions. Our view is that we must wait until we have the full picture.”
