Mayor unveils 2012 sports legacy scheme

By Pete Hayman    04 May 2011

London mayor Boris Johnson has announced the launch of a new "one-stop-shop" project to ensure sports groups across the capital can thrive in the years following the 2012 Games.

Sport for Social Change Network (SSCN), an international initiative, has been introduced to London by the mayor in order to help enhance the city's Olympic and Paralympic legacy. Delivered alongside Nike, Active Communities Network and the Community Action Zone, it is anticipated that a wide range of participants will benefit from SSCN London.

SSCN is now in operation in six boroughs - Brent; Croydon; Hackney; Southwark; Sutton; and Lambeth - following a successful pilot in the latter. Johnson said: "There are thousands of excellent sports groups in the capital that struggle with a myriad of problems and sadly many of them will face closure if they don't get help.

"SSCN will provide the essential support needed to boost these schemes, keeping them in business and securing a long and fruitful future." The new initiative is being funded in partnership with Nike as part of the mayor's £15.5m sports legacy scheme.
