Melia reveals ambitious projects in the Maldives, Kazakhstan, Sumatra
Melia Hotels will open new locations in the Maldives and Kazakhstan in the next two years, along with a resort on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia.
Gran Melia Maldives will be located in Kalhudiyafushi in Thaa, an atoll located 40-minutes from Male. Scheduled to open in October 2017, the hotel will include 95 private villas as well as a spa and leisure centre.
“Opening a Gran Melia hotel in the Maldives has been a dream for us for a long time, but we were always waiting for the right project to come along,” said Maria Zarraluqui, director of expansion for Melia Hotels. “This hotel meets all our expectations.”
Melia Almaty is the first hotel for Melia in Kazakhstan, and will specialise in corporate travel and congresses. Opening in 2018, the hotel will feature 250 bedrooms, as well as “cutting-edge architectural design through a steel and glass structure” that will house the spa and fitness centre, along with a restaurant, bar, lounge and meeting rooms.
Scheduled to open in March 2017, the Melia Pekanbaru is the first hotel in Sumatra for Melia, but the brand has 16 hotels in operation and in the pipeline in Indonesia. The 160-bedroom hotel will rise 29 storeys and include five-star facilities including a fitness centre and spa, swimming pool, sky garden and several restaurants.
Melia is aiming to double its portfolio in Asia in the next three years with the addition of 30 hotels.
