Minister eyes participation 'benchmarks'
Sports minister Hugh Robertson has indicated that a set of new "benchmarks" could be proposed as an alternative to "arbitrary" targets for delivering a lasting sporting legacy from the 2012 Olympics.
Speaking to The Times newspaper, Robertson said that the government is planning to review how best to approach efforts to ensure the London Games provides a lasting legacy. Robertson told the newspaper: "I don't want to adjust policy in order to meet a slightly arbitrary target. I want us to decide what is best for sport, in order to deliver this promise and then benchmark it appropriately.
"I think there's an awful lot of policy over the Labour years that got skewed in order to meet the targets and I just don't think that's a terribly sensible way for the government to proceed." A spokesperson for the Department for Culture, Media and Sport said that it was "wholly committed" to delivering a lasting sporting legacy from the Games, but is looking to outline any proposals by the end of the year.
"We have already announced a new schools Olympics-style competition and our Lottery reforms will deliver an extra £50m a year to sport by 2012, which will benefit local sports clubs and facilities across the country. We will set out further plans later in the year." said the spokesperson.
