More delays for Wembley ramp up events
A planned community day for local people to visit Wembley Stadium has been postponed by a fortnight, prompting fresh concerns that the venue will not be ready to host the FA Cup Final in May.
The community day, announced at the end of January, was originally to be held on 3 March, but will move to 17 March. However, the FA has doubled the original allocation of tickets to attend the day – 60,000 people are now expected to attend.
An ongoing dispute between main contractor Multiplex and electrical contractor Honeywell is threatening to upset recent progress which has been made on the beleagured project.
However, Wembley officials are adamant that everything is still on track. Alex Horne, managing director of Wembley National Stadium Ltd (WNSL) said: "We still remain on track to host the 2007 FA Cup Final.
"The FA will only announce the 2007 Cup Final at Wembley once the stadium has been granted its General Safety Certificate.
"We are on course to go through the necessary testing procedures in order to get the certificate. I’d like to thank Brent Council for being understanding and helpful as we look to start that formal process."
The event is essential to getting the venue licenced and will entail testing the escalators, turnstiles, toilets and other systems.
