Leisure industry leaders feature in New Year Honours list

By Tom Walker    30 Dec 2018

A number of leisure industry people have been recognised in this year's New Year Honours list.

Sport

Former England rugby captain and current chair of World Rugby Bill Beaumont has been knighted for services to rugby. The former RFU chair has steered World Rugby since 2016.

He is joined on the knighthood list by Commonwealth Games Federation president Louise Martin, who has been made a dame (DME).

Those receiving CBEs include outgoing Premier League chair Richard Scudamore; World Curling Federation president Kate Caithness; and Geva Mentor, who helped England's netball team win Commonwealth Games gold.

The England football national team manager Gareth Southgate and 2018 Tour de France winner Geraint Thomas are made OBEs, as is Baroness Margaret Ford, the former chair of the London Legacy Development Corporation, who was recognised for services to sport and business.

Those given an MBE include Olympic rower Frances Houghton, hockey's Karen Brown, triathlon world champion Helen Jenkins, former Arsenal and Football Association vice-chair David Dein, UK Athletics Paralympic head coach Paula Dunn and ex-footballer Leroy Rosenior – who is now vice-president of Show Racism The Red Card.

The two co-founders of the Women's Sport Trust – Jo Bostock and Tammy Parlour – also received MBEs for services to gender equality in sport.

Charles Reed, the outgoing chair of the Activity Alliance (formerly the English Federation of Disability Sport) has been given an MBE for services to disabled people in sport.
