Music facility opens in Edinburgh
A new £3.85m music facility has opened at Stevenson College Edinburgh in the Sighthill area of Scotland’s capital city.
The 2,000sq m (21,500sq ft) Music Box building is based in the further education college’s Faculty of Creative Arts. Its two floors house a 120-seat auditorium; 72sq m (775sq ft) recording studio with a ProTools HD2 workstation; sound-proof rehearsal and music tutorial rooms; individual music practice booths and a dance studio with a sprung floor.
Access is open to students, commercial users and the local community for music college courses, music practice and recordings, as well as to stage academies, combat classes and dance groups.
Principal Susan Bird said: “From developing the initial concept four years ago we have worked hard to plan, design and build this amazing facility.
“I look forward to seeing its facilities being used by everyone from local school children to professional musicians and, of course, our very own students here at Stevenson.”
Funding came from the Scottish Arts Council and music education facility architects RMJM designed the initiative.
