Northern Ireland sports minister pledges boxing investment
Northern Ireland sports minister Carál Ní Chuilín has announced the development of a new boxing strategy to provide funding for the sport, following success at the Olympic Games.
Two Belfast boxers - Paddy Barnes and Michael Conlan - both picked up bronze medals at the London Games and Ní Chuilín said the new strategy will build on that success.
Sport NI will help in developing the strategy and will be asking clubs across the province to indicate equipment needs, before allocating funding in the first quarter of 2013.
Ní Chuilín said: "Many clubs already turn children away as they do not have the space or the proper facilities, and this includes not having the proper facilities for women wanting to take part in the sport.
"Coaching is another aspect that the strategy will address. With the right investment, there is no doubt that boxing will continue to go from strength to strength."
