New 2012 legacy plan for disabled people

By Pete Hayman    18 Mar 2010

A major new plan to deliver a lasting legacy from the 2012 Olympics for 10 million disabled people across the country has been unveiled by the government.

London 2012: A Legacy for Disabled People has been endorsed by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and is poised to offer a range of improvements to life experiences for people with disabilities. Sport England has confirmed that it will invest a total of £3.54m to nine national disability sports organisations as part of the legacy plan, which aims to drive up participation and increase grassroots opportunities.

The English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS) will receive £1.54m of government funding, while the organisation and eight others will be entitled to bid for up to £2m Lottery funding. Organisations in line to receive a share of funding include British Blind Sport; Mencap Sport and the Special Olympics, with an additional £8m investment ring-fenced by Sport England towards disabled sport over the next two years.

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has also set out efforts to improve access to London's transport system and to work with Channel 4 to ensure 2012 coverage is accessible beyond Games time. London 2012 organisers and Arts Council England will invest £400,000 in ten commissions by disabled artists as part of the Unlimited scheme, which aims to help transform the disability arts movement in the UK using the London Games.

Olympics minister Tessa Jowell said: "By working to increase sports participation, improve employment opportunities amongst disabled people and develop a greater appreciation of disability issues in society, our legacy plan for disabled people aims to make a real difference to the way disabled people live their lives every day." Sport England chief executive Jennie Price added: "With only one in 15 disabled adults playing sport regularly - and a decline in that number over the past year - there is a clear need for a change of direction."
