Sport England has called for "everyone in sport" to do more to increase participation by people with learning difficulties.

The organisation's chair, Richard Lewis, made the call as Sport England announced that it would be investing £200,000 at this year's Special Olympics GB Summer Games.

The event, which will be held in Leicester between 25 and 31 July, is open to children and adults with a learning disability, and thousands are expected to compete.

Lewis said: "The games offer a chance for more than 2,700 athletes of all ages to realise their potential and experience the thrill of competing in a major sporting event.

"Progress is being made in opening up sporting opportunities, but there is a long way to go - particularly in driving participation among people with learning difficulties."

He continued: "Every sport, and all those involved in running sport, need to show the determination and ambition to ensure that everyone can benefit from sport's power to transform lives."
