Memphis planetarium to undergo modernisation
The city of Memphis, Tennessee, US, has filed a US$1.2m (£744,000, €943,000) building permit to renovate the Sharpe Planetarium at the Pink Palace Museum in the city centre.
The planetarium closed on 15 September and will remain so until Q2 of 2015, with the renovated planetarium set to include a new full-dome digital theatre. Other work will see the replacement of outdated equipment, new flooring, lighting, seats, and a complete refit of the heating and air conditioning system. The contractor is yet to be determined.
The planetarium renovation comes a few months after another major project for the Memphis Pink Palace Family of Museums, which is operated by the city’s Division of Parks and Neighborhoods and Memphis Museums. The group’s 19-year-old IMAX theatre was recently overhauled, creating the Crew Training International 3D Giant Theater, with an upgrade to 3D digital display.
