Chesterfield Football Club has been granted formal planning consent to build a new stadium by the local council.

The £13.5m development was officially approved by Chesterfield Borough Council after the government decided not to call in the scheme.

The new 10,000 all-seater stadium, which will replace the club's current Saltergate home, will be built on the 22-acre former Dema Glass industrial site in the town. A new Tesco store, as well as additional retail and business units, are also included in the plans.

Leader of the council, Councillor Ray Russell, said: "The redevelopment of the Dema Glass site and the delivery of a new football stadium to replace the outdated Saltergate are vital for the regeneration of the borough."

Wilson Bowden Development will be responsible for the work, which is expected to start in January 2009. The new football stadium is scheduled to be complete by the end of the year.

Barrie Hubbard, chairman of Chesterfield FC, said: "This is a major step forward for Chesterfield Football Club as it means that the pas for a new football stadium are on the verge of being realised."
