A new indoor sports complex has been officially opened at Erin's Own Lavey Gaelic Athletic Club (GAC) in Gulladuff, County Derry, by Northern Ireland's deputy first minister, Martin McGuinness.

The £2.5m facility, which is the result of a partnership between the club and the Termoneeny Community Association (TCA), features a 60m (196.9ft) x 40m (131.2ft) indoor sports arena equipped with a 3G synthetic pitch. Facilities also include an Inclusive Fitness Initiative (IFI)-accredited fitness studio - one of a few fully inclusive sites in Northern Ireland, an aerobics hall, music rooms and eight changing facilities for a range of indoor and outdoor activities as part of a multi-purpose community area.

Designed by architects Colm McGurk and constructed by the Maghera-based company, P and K McKaigue, the development of the new complex was funded through Sport Northern Ireland's 'Building Sport' programme and Magherafelt District Council. The Big Lottery Fund and the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) also contributed towards the scheme, while more than £200,000 was raised by the TCA along with £120,000 from Lavey GAC.

McGuinness said: "This area has a rich sporting history, particularly in the sphere of Gaelic games and the facilities available here will help present and future generations build on that. "The variety and scope of the facilities and activities on offer include schools' programmes, sports coaching and active lifestyle classes, tailored to the needs of all ages. It will also address barriers to participation in activities to the betterment of all sections of the community."
