New Nottingham centre to be topped out
A special ceremony is to be held on 8 October to mark the topping out of a new £6.44m leisure complex currently under construction in Hyson Green, Nottingham.
A 50-station fitness suite equipped by Technogym and a multi-activity studio are among the facilities at the new centre, which is being built on the city's Djanogly City Academy Nottingham site and will replace the ageing Noel Street Leisure Centre. The scheme, which forms part of Nottingham City Council's (NCC) £32m Leisure Centre Transformation Programme to improve the city's sports provision, will also boast a 25m swimming pool, a sauna and steamroom and changing facilities.
Funding for the new centre, which has been designed by Archial Architects and is being built by ISG Regions, has been provided by NCC along with a £2.2m contribution from the Neighbourhood Development Company and a £1m grant from Sport England's Swim Modernisation Programme. NCC portfolio holder for leisure, culture and customers, Dave Trimble, said: "The building is part of the city council's £32m Leisure Transformation Programme to provide 21st century facilities across the city to replace old and inadequate centres that no longer meet modern day expectation and standards.
"I understand that some people will be sorry to see Noel Street Baths go, despite their condition, but strongly believe that a better standard of service should be provided for our existing users and to encourage more people to take part in leisure activities." The centre is scheduled to open at the end of March 2010.
