New York unveils US$70bn tourism target

By Pete Hayman    30 Apr 2012

New York City (NYC) mayor Michael Bloomberg has set out a new target for the US city's tourism sector to have an annual economic impact worth US$70bn (£43bn, EUR52.8m) by 2015.

Bloomberg, together with marketing agency NYC and Company, have also announced a goal of attracting 55 million visitors over the next three years to further boost the New York economy.

The economic impact aim, along with an increase in visitor spending to US$45bn (£27.7bn, EUR34bn) a year, is based on promoting New York to new markets and demographics.

"Every visitor that comes to our city and every dollar they spend are critically important to our economy," said Bloomberg.

"After reaching a record-breaking 50 million visitors last year and setting our sights on attracting 55 million visitors by 2015, New York is working hard to remain the favourite destination for visitors from around the world."
