New future for Broxbourne pool site?
The former Lee Valley Leisure Pool in Broxbourne, Hertfordshire, is set to be transformed under plans for a new leisure development drawn up by the local authority.
Broxbourne Borough Council's planning committee has put forward a draft development brief outlining possible uses for the site following the demolition of the pool, which the site owner, Lee Valley Park Authority (LVPA), says has reached the end of its economic life. The pool closed permanently on 28 September. The committee's report outlines a number of possible development options for the site, including the improvement of existing leisure facilities, which could see the repositioning and upgrade of the cycle and boat hire facilities.
"If this option were proposed, the focus would be on the existing boat facilities," said the report. "These attract many visitors at the weekends and in the summer months, which could offer a range of trips and cruises, as well as the hiring out of boats and canoes. "The existing boat moorings could also be improved and become a key attraction, ultimately attracting new visitors to this part of Lee Valley Park."
Additional leisure facilities, including a new swimming pool, an outdoor adventure playground and an athletics track could also form part of the new development, while the possibility of a housing development on the site has already been deemed to be unacceptable. The council will discuss the proposals for the site's redevelopment with both the LVPA and British Waterways. Demolition of the pool is due to start in February.
