New gymnastics facility planned for Dundee
A new regional gymnastics centre could be created in Dundee as part of a £1.8m overhaul of the city's Dick McTaggart Sports Centre.
Dundee City Council's (DCC) leisure, arts and communities committee is to mull a report outlining the proposals at its meeting on 14 February. The venue has been closed since August 2010 after Dundee College relinquished its lease on the property due to the cost required to address safety issues.
However, DCC has been working in partnership with sportscotland to create the proposed gymnastics centre, which could benefit from £1.2m of Lottery funding. The Dick McTaggart Gymnastics Centre scheme would see existing sports halls re-roofed, with facilities including changing rooms and a dance studio demolished and replaced.
Specialist gymnastics equipment would be installed in order to allow national gymnasts and trampolinists to train, while also being available to grassroots users. DCC leisure, arts and communities convener Bob Duncan said: "With work now started on the new swimming pool, this proposal, along with a plan to reconfigure outdoor pitches at Dundee International Sports Complex, shows how we are working to invest in the future of local people's health and wellbeing."
