New multi-million pound leisure village for Huddersfield

By Caroline Wilkinson    07 Aug 2008

Kirklees Stadium Development Limited (KSDL) has submitted an ambitious planning application for a £100m-plus leisure and commercial complex in Huddersfield. The village is designed around the existing Galpharm Stadium complex and is intended to establish the town as a tourist destination to compete with neighbouring Leeds and Manchester.

KSDL predicts the development, called HD One, will increase attendance three-fold from the current 1.3 million visitors coming to use the stadium facilities, to an excess of four million people a year visiting the new village. KSDL, which owns the development's 54-acre site and the Galpharm Stadium, is also part-owned by Kirklees Council which holds a 40 per cent share in the company.

If the planning application is approve, HD One is expected to include a 9,500sq m (102,257sq ft) outdoor, dry ski slope to be designed and built by Snowflex, two night clubs, a 150-bedroom, four-storey hotel and 21 restaurants, cafes and bars.

There could also be a casino, a 10-pin bowling alley and 9,000sq ft (840sq m) music venue, as well as a snooker and bingo hall, sport retailers and a convenience store. As a residential-led development it will include 144 apartments and office space.

Ralph Rimmer, director of KSDL, said: "KSDL is leading the project but will invite four equity stakeholders in to form a special purpose vehicle, in order to raise the initial £30m needed for capital build costs."

When completed, the project will also result in improved public transport to the stadium complex and due to its position by the River Colne will offer pedestrian plazas and riverside walkways.

The project is divided into four phases, so not to disrupt the stadium's facilities which will continue to operate throughout development. These services include the 24,000-seat stadium – home to Huddersfield Town FC and Huddersfield Giants Rugby League FC, also a nine-screen Odeon cinema and Kirklees Active Leisure health and fitness centre.

Rimmer said the scheme was originally thought of four years ago when KSDL began considering ways to upgrade its stadium and make greater use of the 54-acre riverside site to help regenerate inner Huddersfield.

The project is expected to begin at the end of 2009 and be completed in 2013.
