New rugby first aid course goes online
The Rugby Football Union and Swimming Teachers Association have joined forces to launch a new first aid qualification for rugby coaches and volunteers.
The RFU First Aid Appointed Person Award has been designed especially for rugby. It will be managed by the STA, with the first six-hour course scheduled to start in March.
The STA has previously devised similar programmes for other sports, including ice skating, cricket and golf. Attendees of the course will be taken through a continuous assessment of practical abilities as well as theoretical knowledge.
Specific attention will be given to dealing with concussion, breaks and sprains and blows and cuts to the head and body, as well as an introduction to basic CPR.
Dr Mike England, the Rugby Football Union’s community rugby medical officer said: “Those who hold a role providing pitchside care have a responsibility to provide a safe and competent level of care.” Details: www.communityrugby.com
