New sports village planned for Penrhiwceiber
A partnership which includes The Welsh Rugby League, Penrhiwceiber Strategy Group and Communities First is aiming to develop a multi-use sports facility in Penrhiwceiber.
The scheme was warmly welcomed at an open consultation last week and the team behind the initiative will now seek funding before beginning the planning process.
The new centre will be built at the existing Pentwyn Fields and will provide a 120-bed dormitory to accommodate tourists, as well as classrooms for sports education.
The centre will include an all-weather football pitch, multi-purpose sports hall with boxing gym, tennis courts and five-aside pitch. The new facilities will provide space for use by sports clubs and for community-based activities.
Community development officer Andrew Roberts believes the sports village will give Penrhiwceiber’s economy and local employment opportunities a “massive shot in the arm” and help regenerate the area.
