Newquay surf plans back on track

19 May 2004

Plans to build the UK’s first purpose-built surfing theme park at Towan Beach, Newquay, have been resurrected – after a three-year holding out period.

The plans were originally pitched in 2001, as the local authority was preparing its long-term development strategy that included the compilation of a town centre design guide – published on 20 May this year.

The Surf Park proposal would see the construction of a permanent facility, centred on a purpose built surfing unit – a Retro Rider – based on technology used in waterparks.

Other planned facilities at the site include clubs, bars, shops and a number of visitor attractions.

The plans, which include the creation of changing and entrance facilities together with a bar and roof terrace area, have been laid out to be both dramatic and contemporary in character.

Gill Moore, chair of Newquay’s chamber of commerce, said: “The immediate topography suits the proposals as the Surf Ride area itself is overlooked by a steeply terraced park – thus enhancing the profile and visibility of the attraction.”

Preliminary sketches have been drawn up following a series of proposals commissioned by Newquay chamber of commerce.

The land is currently owned by Restormel borough council and the cost of the development – excluding the cost of land acquisition – is estimated at around £2.5m.
