A borough authority in Northern Ireland will be holding a series of public consultations in September to gather views on a proposed £30m leisure centre.

Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council has approved plans for a purpose-built leisure facility at Craigavon Lakes.

Plans for the South Lake Leisure Centre include an eight-lane pool, a fun and teaching water area, 300 spectator seats, wet and dry changing facilities, a watersports centre, an eight-court sports hall, a fitness gym, a health suite with treatment rooms, spin and dance studios, five activity rooms, two squash courts, an open hub space, a café and a crèche.

Covering three floors, the centre is planned to be completed in 2019.

An online consultation to gather views from stakeholders including sports groups, community associations, schools and the wider public took place throughout July. In September, the council will also hold six public consultations.

Lord Mayor Councillor Garath Keating said: “There’s a growing appreciation of the key role which local government plays in building healthy communities. It’s part of our wider agenda to encourage people of all ages and abilities to lead healthier lifestyles by increasing their level of physical activity.

"Not only does this new facility represent a significant investment in the district’s sports infrastructure, but it will also have a positive impact on improving the health and wellbeing of local people for many generations. For that reason, it’s important that their views are represented and needs are met in the final designs.”
