ODA blows cold on Olympic Park wind turbine

By Martin Nash    03 Jun 2010

The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) has decided not to install a wind turbine on the Olympic Park site in east London.

The turbine had been proposed for Eton Manor in the north of the site as part of the ODA's target to deliver 20 per cent of the park's legacy energy requirements from renewable sources from 2014 onwards when the site is fully operational. However, a number of factors - including new wider safety legislation applied to design elements of the turbine in question - have led to a rethink of the proposals.

As a result, the preferred bidder's turbine supplier for the project has withdrawn from the project - citing a 'challenging delivery timetable' in view of the new requirements - and the ODA has decided that it is no longer feasible for the turbine solution to move ahead. The ODA nonetheless remains committed to its sustainability targets and is now trying to identify alternative options for a renewable energy infrastructure across the Olympic Park.

Among these are the possible installation of photo voltaic solar panels at various locations around the site and the provision of a biomass gasification combined heat and power unit close to the energy centre site. The development of business plans for both is being taken forward, with the ODA expecting further decisions to be taken in the summer.
