OPLC postpones Olympic Stadium decision

By Pete Hayman    24 Jan 2011
'More time' will be taken to consider the Olympic Stadium bids

A decision on the future use of London's Olympic Stadium has been put on hold after the Olympic Park Legacy Company (OPLC) said it needed "more time".

The announcement comes days after Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United football clubs submitted their final bids to occupy the venue following the 2012 Games. It had been anticipated that the OPLC would recommend its preferred bidder to the government and the mayor of London on 28 January.

However, a spokesperson for the company said that it needed further clarification in order to secure "the most appropriate solution" for the flagship venue. West Ham United is working with Newham Council on its bid, as well as concert promoter Live Nation, Essex County Cricket Club and the University of East London.

Tottenham Hotspur has partnered with entertainment operator AEG and is aiming to completely redevelop the stadium following the 2012 Games. As part of Tottenham Hotspur's proposals, the Crystal Palace Athletics Stadium would become a 25,000-capacity venue following a major revamp.

A third option is also to be considered by the OPLC, which involves initial plans to redevelop the stadium into a 25,000-seat mixed-use venue. However, Leyton Orient Football Club has warned that allowing a Premier League club to move to the venue will have "grave implications" for the npower League One club, located a short distance from the Olympic Park.
