Urban Games established by Olympic Games-chasing Budapest
Budapest will establish an Urban Games initiative as the city ramps up its bid to host the 2024 Olympic Games.
The Hungarian capital will stage the event, which comprises of four sports being played out near the city’s world-renowned Unesco heritage sites.
A bicycle race will commence from the Freedom Statue – Budapest’s symbol of independence – while table tennis and four-a-side football will take place in the Klauzal Square Market.
The Urban Games have been organised by the City of Budapest and Budapest 2024 – the organiser of the Olympic bid – and will occur on 1 October 2016.
Competitors will come from a mix of amateur and professional backgrounds, highlighting the Games’ “open to all approach”.
Alexandra Szalay-Bobrovniczky, deputy mayor of Budapest, said that she would like skateboarding included in the event next year and also wanted to “build some international competition within the framework”.
Budapest will find out next year if it has won the right to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in eight years time. Los Angeles, Paris and Rome are the other cities bidding.
