Olympic Games deliver significant business boost for UK economy

By Pete Hayman    14 Aug 2012

The government has vowed to capitalise on the success of London's Olympic Games to the UK economy after businesses secured deals worth up to £14bn in recent weeks.

During the Games, prominent government figures such as chancellor George Osborne were among 35 ministers to meet with around 3,000 business leaders and global representatives.

Brazilian vice president Michel Terner and UK deputy prime minister Nick Clegg hosted the Brazil Business Summit on 11 August to forge new partnerships between the two nations.

The event saw Brazilian ICT multinational Asyst International + Rhealeza announce plans to create 700 jobs in the UK, while UK firm Viper Subsea has secured a contract in Brazil.

Meanwhile, AECOM UK has already won an international contest to design the Rio 2016 Olympic Park masterplan, while Populous has designed the 2014 Sochi stadium.

Clegg said: "It's not only our athletes who have shown themselves to be world-class, British businesses have played a key role in delivering our most successful games in history.

"Producing the most spectacular show on earth has given UK companies the skills and expertise to support Brazil as the baton is passed to Rio 2016."

Business secretary Vince Cable added: "Our task now is to drive home the message that Britain is open for business, and to enhance the conditions that companies need to invest and grow."
