Olympic legacy for Rushmoor residents
Aldershot and Farnborough will benefit from a multi-million pound investment to guarantee a lasting legacy from the 2012 Olympics, according to the local authority.
Rushmoor Borough Council (RBC) has announced that residents will receive upgraded facilities and activities, despite a decision to relocate Team GB's pre-Games preparation to Loughborough. A new £6m outdoor adventure centre will open in autumn 2011 at Runways End, while a £120,000 programme to help young people fulfil their potential is already underway at local schools.
Free leisure access is set to be offered to potential Olympians and Paralympians and a major music event - involving more than 5,000 musicians - will be held as part of the Cultural Olympiad. RBC chief executive Andrew Lloyd said: "We have a unique opportunity to build on the legacy of London 2012 and many of the building blocks are already in place to ensure that happens.
"With a significant level of external investment already achieved to provide a wide range of new facilities and Olympic-based programmes in Rushmoor."
