Plans announced for Olympic cycling complex
British Cycling is to benefit from a new cycling complex in the Lea Valley as part of the ‘pre-build’ plans for London 2012.
The announcement – which coincides with the IOC’s evaluation committee visit to London – has confirmed that the £22m complex, with a velodrome as its centrepiece, will be built regardless of the bid’s success.
The complex becomes the second major project to be built ‘unconditionally’ – a £70m aquatic centre was unveiled last month.
The facility – which is being funded by Sport England, the Lee Valley Regional Park Authority (LVRPA), the London Development Agency (LDA) and Transport for London (TfL) – has been welcomed by British Cycling chief executive, Peter King: "British Cycling has shown itself to be a reliable deliverer of Olympic success, but it has also used its existing facilities wisely. I hope that it will be a cornerstone of a hugely successful Olympic bid by London."
The 34 hectare site will be located to the north of the proposed Olympic park and will feature an indoor velodrome, an outdoor cycle speedway circuit, international BMX competition course, 1.6km road racing circuit and a cyclo-cross/mountain bike course.
