Plans for $105m University of Houston stadium unveiled
The University of Houston (UH) Athletics Department has unveiled plans for its new on-campus stadium, to open for its inaugural game 30 August 2014.
The 40,000-seat synthetic turf stadium, with future capacity for 60,000, is set to cost US$105m (79.12m euro, £64.49m) and host events including football games as well as other university events.
The plans were unveiled on 19 December by representatives from Manhattan Construction and DLR Group who will be leading the project, and UH vice president for intercollegiate athletics Mark Rhoades.
Features include a 5,000 sq ft locker room, split visitor locker room for two teams, a 39,089 sq ft band and performance centre, and 160 concession stands.
There will be an uninterrupted field view from 67 per cent of the stands, audio and video broadcast systems throughout the stadium, and a view of the Houston skyline for fans and television audiences.
Demolition of the existing 70-year-old Robertson Stadium began 2 December and is expected to take six to eight weeks.
A website for the project includes artist renderings of the stadium and live webcams to track its construction.
