Plans revealed for Derby sports hubs

By Tom Walker    15 Dec 2009

Derby City Council (DCC) is to consider a report that recommends the creation of a regional £50m sporting hub, consisting of two separate centres.

DCC commissioned sports consultancy PMP/genesis to evaluate the city's sport facilities and make recommendations on how to improve the provision of sport.

The report by PMP/genesis revealed the current facilities to be outdated and "no longer capable of meeting the modern demands and expectations".

The report recommends the creation of two leisure hubs.

The outdoor hub should house a 250m indoor cycling velodrome capable of hosting elite events and training, a 12-court sports hall and a 2km closed outdoor road cycling circuit. The venue should also be designed to allow conversion to a 4,000-capacity concert venue.

The second, indoor hub, would include a Olympic-sized, 50m swimming pool and a separate water leisure facility.

To support the main hubs, the report suggest the creation of four satellite centres to be located in the north, south, east and west of the city with both wet and dry leisure facilities.

The cost of the six centres is estimated as £50m – £40m for the two main hubs with a further £10m spent on the satellite sites.

The recommendations will be presented to the DCC's cabinet during a full meeting in January 2010 and, subject to approval, a further, detailed study will be undertaken to identify possible locations.

Cuncillor Joe Naitta, cabinet member for leisure, said: "The proposals are very exciting and present an opportunity to put Derby on the sporting map.

"The new development aims to provide a wide range of facilities for various sports from athletics to fitness provision through to cycling and swimming. This should create local, regional and national interest in Derby as a leisure and sporting destination.

"The proposed new facilities will help to develop the city's vital network of voluntary sports clubs, and encourage active people of all ages and skill levels."
