Poll defeat for Nassau County hub proposal
Nassau County voters have rejected a proposal put forward by the local authority to borrow US$400m (£243.9m) for a new sports and entertainment complex in Long Island, US.
The plan would have led to a property tax increase of US$58 (£35) per household each year for the next 30 years but was rejected by the electorate in a referendum held on 1 August. A new sports arena; a ballpark; and an indoor multi-purpose venue for track and field events and conventions formed part of the proposed Nassau County complex.
Part of the Economic Development and Job Creation Plan, the new hub development would have also provided a long-term home for the New York Islanders ice hockey team. Following the referendum, Nassau County executive Ed Mangano said: "We will find a new path, a path that brings people together, a path that solves the problem that blockades the redeveloping of this property.
"I still believe in a sports and entertainment destination. We'll continue to work hard to find a balance so that we can create jobs and opportunities in our great county."
