Portsmouth FC denies administration reports

By Pete Hayman    11 Dec 2009

Portsmouth Football Club (PFC) has rejected suggestions the club is on the verge of going into administration and insists that owner Ali Al Faraj remained committed to the club.

The Premier League club's financial security has already been called into question this season after a protracted takeover by businessman Sulaiman Al Fahim, which was then followed the sale of the club to current owner Al Faraj. In a statement, a PFC spokesperson said: "The club is not going into administration. If that were the case it would have happened at the end of September or early October. This week alone, HM Revenue and Customs were paid £2m and other historical arrears are being dealt with on an ongoing basis.

"The new owner has not had the benefit of TV revenue to aid the club, with the next major instalment due in January. However, he and his associates have already invested substantial funds to keep the club operating and will continue to do so." Meanwhile, Hellenic Premier League club Bicester Town Football Club (BTFC) has staved off the threat of eviction from its Oxford Road home ground after paying £3,500 to settle a dispute with Bicester Sports Association (BSA).

The club has also agreed a to pay monthly sum to the BSA in order to clear a debt totalling around £9,000. However, King's Lynn Football Club (KLFC) of the Unibond League Premier Division has lost its battle against a High Court winding up order, which was brought against the Norfolk club due to an outstanding £77,000 tax bill owned to HM Revenue and Customs.

In a statement, KLFC chair Tim Coates and director Ken Bobbins said: "We had raised sufficient funds to pay the tax but it would be pointless to pay the tax if provision was not in place to take the club forward." The Borough Council of King's Lynn and West Norfolk, which owns The Walks – the home ground of KLFC – said that it is hopeful the venue will continue to be used for senior football in the town.
