Qatar’s Olympic ambition can create opportunities for UK sport sector

By Matthew Campelli    16 Mar 2017
Doha tried and failed to win the 2020 Olympics

Qatar’s intention to bid for and host the Summer Olympics Games will open up opportunities for companies in the UK sport sector to win business, according to the government’s export body.

The nation has already won the right to stage the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which fired the starting gun on a large countrywide infrastructure project including the development of stadiums, sports facilities and transport operations.

It is expected that Qatar will follow up with a concerted effort to bring the largest scale sporting event in the world next.

Talking at the Department of International Trade’s (DIT) Global Sports Conference 2017, the department’s representative in Qatar’s British Embassy Darren Johnson said that it was “highly likely” that the Middle Eastern state’s capital Doha would bid again for the Olympics after losing out to Tokyo in 2020.

He added that the Qatari Olympic Committee was hosting up to 105 events a year – such as athletics, equestrian and handball tournaments – to boost its credibility, and that they are required “British supply such as overlay and security”.

With the World Cup approaching, Johnson revealed that a number of the stadiums, such as the Al Rayyan and the Qatar Foundation Stadium, were well into the construction phase, although there was a chance to win business with stadium lighting, roof facade, structural steel, cladding, pitch, seating, screens, security, catering, cleaning and laundry.

Johnson said the tournament also opened up further opportunities.

Qatar’s World Cup organisers, the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy, is planning 41 training grounds (16 to be built and 25 refurbishments) and five fanzones, with opportunities to deliver security, entertainment, experience and catering.
