RDHA's library and Komagata Maru Park project given RAIC medal
The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) has named the Springdale Library and Komagata Maru Park – designed by RDH Architects (RDHA) – among the winners of its bi-annual Governor General’s Medals.
The biennial awards recognise and celebrate excellence in recently built and designed projects by Canadian architects.
First opened in 2019, the 26,000sq ft Springdale Library, contemplative garden, neighbourhood park and splash pad was created for the City of Brampton in Ontario, Canada.
RDHA’s goal was to create an inclusive gathering place and a counterpoint to the surrounding suburban environment.
The location of the building is framed by a commercial plaza to the east and a natural ravine to the north and west.
According to RDHA, its conceptual approach combines two formal devices to create an experiential relationship to the project's greenfield setting. These are an undulating, organic sectional topography and a perimeter which weaves together indoor and outdoor spaces.
Commenting on its decision to award the project with the General's Medal, the RAIC jury said: "We lauded the element of joyful surprise in this suburban library.
"Outside, visitors can appreciate the thoughtful attention to refined details: the slenderness of the columns, the thinness of the roof.
"The three courtyards orchestrate strategies for echoing the landscaping inside and capturing different types of experience.
"Inside offers an unexpected encounter with the oculi, and magical views across the interior. This confident and competent design is not shy about celebrating the suburbs, making a civic contribution to the local authorities in Brampton should be proud of.”
