Racino plans put on hold at Wolverhampton
Arena Leisure has suffered a setback in its bid to open the UK’s first ‘racino’ – a combined racecourse and casino complex – at the Dunstall Park racecourse, Wolverhampton.
The government has called in the plans, pointing out that the racecourse is situated on a green belt.
Arena had already received full backing for the scheme from Wolverhampton City Council last January.
The racecourse operator announced the racino plans in April 2003, as a joint venture with bingo operator Gala Group. The development included doubling the size of the onsite hotel and a number improvements to the racecourse.
Ian Penrose, managing director of Arena, said: “Although we are disappointed that our aspirations to create a ground-breaking venture in Wolverhampton will be delayed, we will continue to work with all concerned to bring the matter to a successful conclusion.”
Arena said that it hopes that the government office’s review will be determined by the end of the year.
Dunstall racecourse is one of six courses operated by Arena Leisure. Details: www.arenaleisureplc.com
