Record funding for Welsh rugby union

By Pete Hayman    03 Sep 2009

Rugby union across Wales has benefited from a record amount of investment during the financial year ending 2009, according to the Welsh Rugby Union's (WRU) annual report.

A total of £17m - a £1.8m increase on the previous year - was spent by the WRU on efforts to sustain and develop the game at all levels, with nearly £4m spent on community rugby and more than £12m shared between the Ospreys, Cardiff Blues, the Scarlets and Newport Gwent Dragons regional teams. The national governing body posted an annual profit of £1m for the financial year ending 2009, while group debt has been reduced by £2.1m to £39.7m. However, turnover decreased by £0.9m to £49.4m, compared with the previous year.

Roger Lewis, WRU chief executive, said: "It's been a very positive year in what has undoubtedly been one of the most economically turbulent periods of recent times. "The outlook now for the group is positive and we will continue to invest in the development of the game at all levels. That means we will drive forward playing standards and maximise participation at the community level to fuel our player and coach development pathway structures."
