SIV reveals design of Ponds Forge
The new gym at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre in Sheffield – designed by architects Race Cottam Associates – has been revealed.
The 1250sq m (13,500sq ft) Fitness Unlimited gym features more than 100 stations and new fitness equipment, while the overall £3m transformation of the sports centre will also provide two exercise studios, changing rooms and an improved members only spa area with treatment rooms.
It is anticipated that the improved facility will attract around 6,500 future users.
General manager Helen Broadbent of Sheffield International Venues (SIV), which is managing the venue, said: “The investment in Ponds Forge will help to ensure that the venue remains one of the best in the country and continues to lead the sector.
“Our members and centre users are at the heart of the venue and it was with this in mind that we have created a Membership Information Area. We want people to see and experience the facilities and feel involved in the development. We would encourage and welcome everybody to come and have a look.”
On visiting the new area, fitness member Ian Maude said: “The plans for the new gym look really good and the equipment is high quality. I particularly like the fact it gives you a break down of your workout, how many calories you’ve burned and what distances you’ve travelled.”
The centre’s existing sport and fitness facilities will remain open to the public throughout the refurbishment process.
