Supermarket chain Sainsbury's has announced a £10m funding package to support the new School Games over the next four years and contribute towards the 2012 Games' legacy.

The group was the former headline sponsor of the UK School Games and will strengthen a involvement in school sports across the UK through the latest funding commitment.

Meanwhile, the Department of Health and Sport England will invest an additional £14m and £8m respectively in order to extend funding for School Games organisers up until 2015.

Adidas has also signed a sponsorship agreement with the government to provide more than 1,600 young athletes taking part in the School Games with sports kit.

Culture secretary Jeremy Hunt said: "The funding package - from Sainsbury's, Adidas and the Department of Health - shows the commitment to completely transform competitive sport in schools."

Sainsbury's chief executive Justin King added: "We have promoted a healthier and more active lifestyle for all for many years now and this new sponsorship will see us continue to build on that in 2012 and beyond."
