San Antonio Zoo reports $283 million economic impact as expansion plans progress
San Antonio Zoo has reported a US$283 million economic impact for 2025, following a decade-long transformation programme that has seen almost US$200 million invested into the Texas attraction.
The non-profit zoo welcomed almost 1.2 million visitors during the year, supported 957 jobs and generated US$207.9 million in wider visitor spending through areas including hospitality, retail and tourism.
The results come as the organisation prepares for its next phase of growth, with plans being developed to expand the zoo's footprint by up to 15 acres.
President and CEO Tim Morrow said design work is underway, with further details of the expansion expected to be announced in the coming months.
Morrow has led San Antonio Zoo since 2014, overseeing a programme of habitat developments, infrastructure improvements and guest experience upgrades.
Recent projects include Congo Falls, a two-acre gorilla habitat which returned the species to the zoo for the first time in more than 30 years. The development includes a 70ft climbing tower, a 30ft waterfall and new guest viewing areas.
The zoo has also completed the expansion of Naylor Savanna and opened the Brewer Ocean Conservation Lab, which supports coral conservation and restoration.
Founded in 1914, San Antonio Zoo is home to more than 750 species and operates as a non-profit organisation. Its wider strategy focuses on conservation, animal habitats, education and improving the visitor experience.
