It has been revealed that 19 of the 20 clubs currently competing in Serie A intend to split from the rest of the Italian Football League following a disagreement with lower league clubs over financial issues.

Lecce is reported to be the only club in Serie A that has not backed the decision to breakaway from the current pyramid to form the new Lega Calcio Serie A, which will include some of Europe's largest football clubs, such as AC Milan, Juventus and Roma. According to the BBC, a statement from the new league said: "Nineteen Serie A clubs today decided to create the Lega Calcio Serie A. The decision was made because of the impossibility of reaching an understanding with the Serie B clubs."

The move echoes the formation of the English Premier League in 1992, when clubs in England's top division split from the three other Football League divisions in a bid create a new league, which led to an increased share in television and sponsorship revenue.
