Setanta enters administration

By Pete Hayman    23 Jun 2009

Setanta, the sports broadcaster, has been placed into administration after being stripped of the right to screen live English and Scottish Premier League (SPL) fixtures for failing to meet payment deadlines.

Neville Kahn, Lee Manning and Nick Edwards of Deloitte have been appointed to oversee the running of Setanta's UK operations, which are now expected to be shut down. A rescue deal put forward by Access Industries fell through last week. The demise of Setanta raises concerns over the future of some SPL clubs, which received between £900,000 and £3.5m from the broadcaster during the 2008-09 season, according to the BBC.

There are fears that clubs have already budgeted for similar payments in 2009-10, although SPL officials have announced that they are seeking a new broadcast deal. In a statement, SPL chief executive Lex Gold said: "Setanta has been unable to meet our extended deadline for the outstanding £3m payment to the SPL and, in terms of the notice previously issued, our British broadcasting rights for the 2009-10 season and beyond revert back to us."

Setanta also currently holds broadcasting deals with the Blue Square Premier, as well as the Indian Premier League cricket, US PGA golf and the Magners League rugby union competition. A proposed rescue deal involving Access Industries, led by tycoon Len Blavatnikin, collapsed despite lengthy negotiations. A statement from the company said: "Despite intensive efforts on all sides, and despite significant progress in a number of areas, there remain a number of issues which we have been unable to resolve with in the time available."

The English Premier League has confirmed that US-based broadcaster ESPN has acquired the rights previously held by Setanta to screen a total of 46 fixtures during the 2009-10 season, as well as 23 fixtures a season for a three-year period from 2010-11. Setanta International and Setanta Ireland are not included in the administration proceedings.
