Abandoned Sheffield ski village to undergo £22.5m redevelopment under Extreme brand

A former ski village in Sheffield, UK, will be reinvented as a sports attraction after a £22.5m (US$30.2m, €25.5m) plan was announced to breathe new life into the site.

Working in partnership with Continuum Attractions, Sheffield City Council will resurrect the 48-acre (194,000sq m) site as a sports, leisure and entertainment venue under the Extreme brand.

The first phase of the plan will see the restoration of the disused ski slopes and mountain bike tracks.

Among the facilities on-site, plans include a world-class sports and leisure 'experience' complex, with facilities catering to local residents, tourists and action sports enthusiasts.

The plans include are an indoor skydiving facility, live music and a gaming and virtual reality hub. Also on the cards are restaurants, bars, social spaces, retail outlets and themed accommodation.

“This news will come as an early Christmas present to the thousands of winter sports enthusiasts who trained on the slopes at the ski village, many of whom who are associated with Extreme as ambassadors for its sporting ambitions,” said councillor Mazher Iqbal, cabinet member for business and investment at Sheffield City Council.

“Bringing Sheffield ski village and the surrounding area back into use as part of a global package of sports facilities, hotels and other leisure pursuits is a fantastic outcome.”

The Alpine-themed site first opened its doors in 1998 but closed after a suspected arson attack in 2012. Over the past five years there have been more than 60 fires started at the site, with fire crews regularly called out to extinguish blazes started from debris and rubbish left by fly-tippers.

Work on the new facility is expected to start soon, with the redeveloped ski village and extreme sport destination to open in 2019.

Following the first phase of development, the Extreme Destinations-led consortium will develop further residential and leisure facilities around on on-site, subject to planning permission.

Local film production company Salt-Street Pro produced this video of the abandoned slope in order to help drum up support for the redevelopment of Sheffield Ski Village.
