Singapore embarks on Gardens by the Bay attraction
The National Parks Board of Singapore is set to develop a three-garden complex at Marina Bay in central Singapore.
The Gardens by the Bay project will comprise three themed gardens – Garden at Marina South, Garden at Marina East and Garden at Marina Centre – covering 94 hectares (232 acres) of waterfront land, linked by interconnected waterways.
The 54-hectare (133-acre) Garden at Marina South will feature a conservatory complex for cooler climate plants, horticulture and floriculture displays, areas for garden festivals and an outdoor open space for concerts and performances.
The 30-hectare (74-acre) Garden at Marina East will feature a waterfront garden centred on water-based activities within the marina channel. It will include boathouses and spectator amenities.
The 10-hectare (25-acre) Garden at Marina Central will comprise a beachfront garden and promenade.
The scheme will also include an applied research and educational centre – called Aquadetum – which will teach visitors about the symbiotic relationship between plants, animals and water in an aquatic ecosystem.
UK-based landscape architecture consultancy Grant Associates and landscape design company Gustafson Porter have designed the garden project.
Work on site is expected to start in October 2007, with completion by 2010. Details: www.gardensbythebay.org.sg
