South Africa eyes up 2020 Olympic bid
South Africa's national Olympic committee has invited potential host cities in the country to come forward after it revealed plans to oversee a bid to stage the 2020 Summer Games.
Following its successful hosting of the 2010 World Cup, the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) is now looking to bring the Olympic Games to Africa for the first time. Cape Town had been vying for the right to host the 2004 Games after the city defeated Johannesburg and Durban in an internal contest, before the International Olympic Committee decided to award the event to Athens, Greece.
SASCOC chief executive officer Tubby Reddy said: "We have decided that the way forward would be to engage government and key stakeholders on the way forward, but our intention is to provide a world-class city capable of hosting Africa's first Olympic Games in 2020."
