A new 100,000sq ft (9,290sq m) arts complex is to be developed in Southampton as part of a mixed-use scheme led by Grosvenor, which has been given the green light by councillors.

The London-based property group is behind plans for the development, which has involved CZWG Architects and will also include new restaurant and retail space.

Plans for the arts complex, which will be a "major addition" to the city's Cultural Quarter, include auditoria; studio and creative space for the performing arts; and media facilities.

A contemporary art gallery and six restaurant units are also earmarked as part of the project, which was green lighted by Southampton City Council (SCC) planners on 27 September.

SCC and Arts Council England have pledged funding towards the development, which will feature a glazed façade and soaring stepped upper floors. It is due for completion in 2015.

Grosvenor development manager Alex Robinson said: "Grosvenor has worked closely with Southampton City Council over the past few months to ensure that we submitted a proposal that combined outstanding design and exceptional leisure facilities."

SCC leader Royston Smith added: "It will be a place in the Cultural Quarter where all the arts can thrive and will draw in hundreds of thousands of visitors every year."
