Spanish chain DiR rolls out 'a la carte' concept
After a successful trial at one club, Barcelona-based health club chain DiR has now converted a total of 13 of its 17 gyms to “à la carte”.
This flexible model allows the clubs to offer both mid-range and low cost memberships. Members only pay for the facilities and services they use – a concept that has already been embraced by more than 4,000 members.
This initiative allows the clubs to offer a low cost membership, of €25 (US$28, £18) to use just the fitness area and virtual classes. Any extra services, including pool or changing room use, can be added on demand.
The system has been made possible by a €3m (US$3.4m, £2.2m) technology investment, which utilises fingerprint and face recognition plus touch screens to hire additional services. The extra services are then paid for directly from the member’s bank account.
CEO and founder, Ramon Canela, says: “In catering or automative industries, consumers can choose a la carte, so why shouldn’t we also apply it to fitness?”
